Sharon Peterson lives in Milan, IL.  For her day job, she teaches 2nd Grade in Orion, IL.  Her young sheltie, Rudy, is her class dog.  He attends school with Sharon every Thursday.Sharon has been involved in the sport of dog obedience for 25 years, titling her first sheltie in 1983.  Since that time, she has put both AKC and UKC obedience titles on 7 dogs:  4 shelties, 2 standard poodles and 1 golden (plus helped with her daughter’s papillon).  Even though Obedience is Sharon’s true love, she also competes in Rally Obedience, Agility and Herding. Sharon taught 4-H dog obedience in Henry County, IL for 10 years while her children competed with their dogs. She has taught beginning through advanced obedience classes for Scott County Kennel Club for the past 15 years.

Sharon currently lives with her two shelties.  Simon (Misty Morn Simon Sez), 11 years old, earned his MACH (Master Agility Champion) title in 2006.  This is the highest agility title possible.  Also in 2006, Simon earned his UKC Obedience Championship.   He has 2 herding titles, 3 Rally Obedience titles and has earned his UDX5 in AKC obedience.  Rudy, 4 years old, has his UKC  Companion Dog Excellent Obedience title and his AKC Utility title, his AKC Excellent Agility titles, has 3 Rally Obedience titles and 2 Herding titles.  Rudy is also a certified therapy dog.  Jazz, a 3 year old papillon has also joined the group.  She is a rescue, turned in by an owner that didn't have time for her any more.  Jazz is working in agility with her Excellent Jumpers and Open Standard title.  She's working on focus for obedience!

Sharon’s theory on dog training is that “dogs need to learn how to learn.”  The best way to teach them that is by using positive training methods:  treats, toys, tricks and games!  Dogs can discover that being wrong is not something bad, just something they have to try again.  The dog learns to offer a different behavior that is the correct behavior.  This type of training develops a strong bond of trust between handler and dog.  Because of this trust and respect, the dog really wants to do obedience exercises. Sharon's dogs:
